
The Nine Unknown Men of Ashoka – Maurya Dynasty
Ashoka was an Indian emperor who belonged to Maurya Dynasty. Ashoka ruled almost 36 years from 268 BC to 232 BC. Maurya Dynasty was founded by Ashoka’s grandfather Chandragupta Maurya. Ashoka was well known for Buddhism promotion throughout the country. He spread Maurya empire over an area stretching from Afghanistan to Bangladesh. Also Maurya dynasty almost covered the whole Indian subcontinent except for some parts like present day Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. The whole empire was controlled from Pataliputra which used to be the capital of the dynasty. Ujjain and Taxila were it’s provisional capitals that time. The Nine Men were selected by the Emperor Ashoka and the society of the Nine Unknown Men was formed eventually. This was formed just after 226 BC. It is said that Ashoka’s force have killed over 100000 Kalinga Warriors and over 150000 region’s villagers were deported. From then Ashoka left all kind of violence forever.Ashoka was a pure vegetarian person but had never violated others belief of eating meat. He had a great respect towards other religion sections. One thing he did is that he prohibited consumption of alcohol. In this case he was very much intolerant.
The Nine Men society was formed to acquire knowledge across the world. In a book, The Morning of the Magicians, it is mentioned that Ashoka formed this society and Pope Silvester II had met them once.According to Pauwels and Bergier, Ashoka believed that the true win is to win the men’s heart by doing suitable duty. This is because of the desire that all living beings should enjoy their life, peace and happiness. Ashoka wanted to safeguard some volatile information form evil minded people who could cause a huge disaster. So he formed a group of nine brilliant people from India at that time and formed the Nine Unknown Men. Identity of these nine men was kept secret for security purpose. The society was then ordered to accumulate all the scientific knowledge from all kind of science topics. Topics such as natural science, psychology, composition of matter, etc. were of major concern.
The greatest fear of Ashoka was that if too much of knowledge of science and technology was given to ordinary men then that might cause destruction. Each one of the nine men were given specific science sector to study and write book which was then updated and revised for the expansion of knowledge. Every time when the nine men were unable to complete the task whether from death, wishing to retire, etc. , the person was replaced with a new successor.
